Matěj Pichler is a Czech director, cinematographer, and photographer whose creative roots trace back to the forests of Šumava. What began as a childhood hobby quickly grew into a lifelong passion for visual storytelling. After graduating from the Film Academy of Miroslav Ondříček in Písek (FAMO), he built a career that spans commercial, fashion, and documentary productions.
Matěj’s work blends traditional cinematic language with modern technology. Whether it’s the use of vintage lenses or minimal setups, he believes that what makes it onto the film strip should feel intentional, not overthought. His visual style reflects a deep appreciation for simplicity, emotion, and the craftsmanship of filmmaking.
He has contributed to several film projects in recent years, including Daria (2020) as director, Přišla v noci (2023) as co-producer, and Identita (2024) as executive producer. His most recent work includes upcoming titles such as Holka od vedle and Na Plech (2025).
Inspiration comes from all corners of the creative world, including films, advertising, and music videos, which all influence his process. He enjoys reinterpreting existing ideas through his own lens, discovering new possibilities along the way.
Matěj’s dream is to direct a historical film set in the 18th-century Šumava region, bringing the landscapes of his childhood to life on screen. His advice for aspiring creators is simple: don’t be afraid of new things. Keep creating, again and again. That’s what will move you forward.
